Whatever the dental emergency, the best course of action is to try and calm your child and call us as soon as possible. The most common child emergencies are infections which result in tenderness, swelling, pain and difficulty speaking or eating. Less common emergencies in children usually involve trauma (injury) as a result of a fall or sports accident. The injuries can include cut or split lips, gums, tongues and the inside of cheeks, as well as mobility of the teeth, or in extreme cases chipping, breaking or complete loss of a tooth. Where a tooth has been chipped, broken or knocked out, try and find the broken part of the tooth (or whole tooth). Place it in a container with MILK so the tooth is completely immersed, then bring it with you so we can attempt to reattach it. If you suspect your child has a more serious facial injury such as a broken jaw or cheekbone, please take them directly to your nearest Accident and Emergency department.
